Battle of Fates (운명전쟁49) is a 2026 Korean competition series on Disney+ that gathers 49 "fate readers" from four traditions: shamanism, saju, tarot, and face reading. They are not the same craft. Saju is a calculation from a birth date and time. Shamanic reading comes from a practitioner's spirit connection. Tarot is a card draw. Face reading is physiognomy. If you watched the show and wondered which one you'd actually try, this guide separates the four, then shows what a saju chart contains.

What is Battle of Fates, and what do its fate readers do?

The format is an elimination contest. Readers face tests of reading accuracy (the show calls the first round a "Battle of Intuition") and advance only if their readings hold up. The field mixes traditional Korean shamans (mudang), saju readers, tarot readers, and physiognomists, and some contestants combine methods.

The show is entertainment, and so is every reading in it. That framing matters: none of these traditions is a test of what will happen, and Sajoo treats saju the same way.

Saju: a chart calculated from your birth moment

Saju (사주, "four pillars") converts the year, month, day, and hour you were born into eight characters of the traditional East Asian calendar. Two readers given the same birth data will produce the same chart, because the chart is arithmetic. What differs is the interpretation. A saju reader looks at the Day Master (the stem of the day pillar, the character that stands for you), the balance of the five elements, and the relationships between the pillars, then describes a temperament and its seasons.

  • Input: birth date, birth time, place (for time correction).
  • Output: a fixed chart of eight characters.
  • Reader's role: interpret, not channel.
  • Repeatability: the chart is identical every time; interpretations vary by school and reader.

Eight characters in four columns — 사주팔자, “four pillars, eight characters.” The day stem is you.

Sajoo's readings are this kind of reading: the chart is computed instantly, and the sentences are written in advance by a Korean reader, not generated by an AI and not received from a spirit.

Shamanic reading (신점): a different source entirely

A Korean shaman, or mudang, works through a relationship with spirits. Many describe being "called" (신내림) before practicing. A shamanic reading (신점, sinjeom) does not start from a calendar calculation. The practitioner speaks from intuition or possession, and the same question can get a different answer on a different day. Rituals (gut) are part of the tradition.

In Korea, people often use the word "fortune telling" for both saju and sinjeom, which is why the show can put them in one room. Structurally they are opposites: one is a chart, the other is a person.

Tarot and face reading: imported and observed

Tarot is a Western card system. The reading depends on which cards are drawn and how the reader interprets the spread, so it is neither calculated from birth data nor sourced from spirits. Face reading (관상, gwansang) is physiognomy: a reader looks at the structure of a face and describes character from it. It is observational, and it changes as the face changes.

Which one is Sajoo?

Sajoo is saju only. We compute the four pillars from your birth data, show the free chart, and the paid reading is a human-written library matched to your chart. We do not do shamanic readings, tarot, or face reading, and we do not predict events. If the show made you curious about your own chart, the free reveal takes about a minute and asks only for a birth date (birth time optional, but it sharpens the hour pillar).

Curious what your chart says?

FAQ

Is saju the same as what the shamans do on the show?
No. Saju is a calculation from birth data with a human interpretation. Shamanic reading is not calculated and comes from the practitioner.
Can two saju readers disagree?
On the chart, no. On what it means, yes. Interpretation differs by school and by reader, which is why Sajoo publishes its method.
Does a saju chart predict what will happen?
No. It describes a temperament and its seasons. Sajoo frames every reading as entertainment and self-reflection, not prediction.

The spin-off: House of Fates

Disney+ has greenlit a spin-off, reported under the title House of Fates: not a second season but a travel and ritual format led by the show's top readers, with no premiere date announced as of October 2026. We keep the reported facts, and what a reading on it would actually be, on a separate page.
