Yeokma (역마살): the travel star — born to leave

6 min read · for fun & self-reflection

Some people are born with one foot out the door — the ones who feel most themselves in transit, who reorganize their lives around the next departure. The saju tradition noticed this temperament centuries ago and gave it a name: yeokma (역마살), the travel star. The word literally means "post-station horse" — the horses that carried messengers between way stations across old Korea, always moving, never home.

How the travel star is found

Yeokma works exactly like its sibling dohwa, through the four three-branch alliances (삼합): 申子辰 (Water), 寅午戌 (Fire), 巳酉丑 (Metal), 亥卯未 (Wood). Each alliance points to one travel-star branch: 寅 for the Water team, 申 for the Fire team, 亥 for the Metal team, 巳 for the Wood team.

Find the alliance your day (or year) branch belongs to, then look for that alliance's travel branch anywhere in your pillars. If it's there, you carry the horse.

申子辰 → 寅 · 寅午戌 → 申 · 巳酉丑 → 亥 · 亥卯未 → 巳 — each alliance has one Travel Star branch.

From warning to badge

In an agrarian world where staying put meant stability, a star that pulled you away from home read as an affliction — old readings worried over the wanderer. The modern world inverted the verdict. Mobility became opportunity: the yeokma temperament is now read as the mover's gift — the expat, the pilot, the founder on their third city, the mind that does its best work in motion.

Carried well, yeokma reads as range: you adapt fast, you're energized by unfamiliar rooms, and distance doesn't scare you. Its shadow is the itch — restlessness that can mistake leaving for solving. The traditional advice amounts to: give the horse real roads. A life with built-in motion (travel, change, variety of work) satisfies the star; a life that fights it tends to feel tight.

No yeokma? You're not doomed to stillness — it simply means home is an anchor rather than a launchpad, and your chart finds its adventures by other routes.
